SEA-TAC, Wash. - The region's mid-September heat wave shattered a high temperature record Friday, and continued very warm conditions nearly reached the record high on Saturday, the National Weather Service said.
Friday's peak temperature of 87 degrees at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport surpassed the previous record of 84 for Sept. 11, set just two years ago.
The high temperature on Saturday reached 83 degrees - just two degrees short of the highest recorded temperature for the date, which stands at 85 degrees - a record that has stood since 1975.
Temperatures elsewhere around Western Washington were even higher, flirting with 90 degrees further south.
By Saturday evening, however, a cooling trend developed. Temperatures on Sunday are expected to top out at around the mid-70s in the Seattle area - ending the record-breaking heat spell.
Then, expect temperatures to rise slightly about mid-week - not into record-breaking territory, but above average for this time of year.
